Domains By Proxy - Frequently Asked Questions

About Domains By Proxy

Why should I use a privacy service for my domain registration?

You should know that the contact information listed on your domain name has to be made publicly available per your registrar's agreement with International Corporation of Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN). Using false information violates the registration agreement and could lead to the termination of your domain name registration. However, with Domains By Proxy you can have all the benefits of a domain name registration without exposing your personal information for everyone to see. When you purchase our private domain name registration services, the Whois directory lists the Domains By Proxy name, postal address, and phone number instead of yours.

Although we become the registrant for your domain registration on your behalf, you still retain the FULL BENEFITS OF DOMAIN REGISTRATION. Thus, only you can:

  • Cancel, sell, or transfer your domain registration
  • Cancel our services so that registrant status reverts to you
  • Renew your domain registration upon expiration
  • Designate the name servers to which your domain points
  • Resolve complaints involving your domain registration

To purchase a private domain name registration, go to the Web site of any of our affiliated registrars and shield your identity today.

How do I know Domains By Proxy won't steal my domain name?

Domains By Proxy is part of the tenured and successful The Go Daddy Group, Inc. family of companies. Because Domains By Proxy is here for the long-term and is committed to building upon the success enjoyed by other Go Daddy Group companies, you should feel secure that our only intention is to help you protect your identity and privacy. In addition, your domain name registration is insured against loss or misuse by American International Insurance Company, as well as backed by your registrar's guarantee.

Please see our Domain Name Proxy Agreement for further details regarding both insurance and your registrar's guarantee.

How do I know my identity is protected?

Your identity is protected because your personal information is not published in the Whois database. Instead, the Domains By Proxy name, postal address, and phone number are made publicly available. And we won't reveal your identity unless required by law or if you breach our Domain Name Proxy Agreement.

If I buy a private domain name from Domains By Proxy, will I still be listed as its registrant?

First, Domains By Proxy is not a registrar so you cannot register a domain name directly from us. However, you can use our services with domain names registered through our affiliated registrars, all of which are ICANN-accredited. Second, when you purchase our services, Domains By Proxy becomes the listed (proxied) registrant of the domain name. Even though Domains By Proxy is the listed (proxied) registrant, you retain the FULL BENEFITS OF DOMAIN REGISTRATION. This means that you can:

  • Cancel, sell, or transfer your domain registration
  • Cancel our service so that registrant status reverts to you
  • Renew your domain registration upon expiration
  • Designate the name servers to which your domain points
  • Resolve complaints involving your domain registration

The benefit of this arrangement is that the Whois directory publishes the Domains By Proxy name, postal address, and phone number instead of YOUR name, postal address, email, and phone number. That way, you are protected from spammers, scammers, and other intruders. Click the link below to see how the Whois directory will look with and without a private domain registration:

http://www.domainsbyproxy.com/popup/whoisexample.aspx.

Do I have to enter valid contact information for a private domain registration?

Yes. When you purchase a domain name you must include accurate and valid information for all of your contacts (e.g., Registrant, Administrative, Technical, and Billing), regardless of whether you choose to make it a "private" or "public" registration. This is the only way your registrar and Domains By Proxy can reach you with issues concerning your domain name and our private registration services.

If you enter false information, you risk having your domain name, as well as our private registration services, canceled entirely. Please review our Domain Name Proxy Agreement and your registrar's agreement carefully so you fully understand your rights and obligations.

How do I check the expiration date of a private registration?

Your privacy service expires when the domain name expires.

Obtaining Secure Certificates for Privately Registered Domains

Yes, you can obtain a secure certificate, digital certificate, or merchant account for your Web site even if you have a private registration. In this situation, you:

  1. Start the application process with the provider of your choice (GoDaddy.com, Thawte, VeriSign, etc.).
  2. Request a domain authorization letter from Domains By Proxy. To request a domain authorization letter, log in to your Domains By Proxy account and click the Domain Authorization Letters link. Once there, you provide information we use to prepare the domain authorization letter. You also pay a $15 service fee for preparation and forwarding of the domain authorization letter, which we forward directly to the provider of your choice.

When requesting a domain authorization letter, please be prepared to provide the following information:
    • Domain name the certificate is in connection with
    • Your name
    • Your Domains By Proxy login ID
    • Your telephone number
    • Certificate issuer's name
    • Order or Reference number from your issuer
    • Voice contact number for issuer
    • Fax number for issuer
    • The name of the applicant for the secure certificate

Complete requests are usually processed within 48 hours and often sooner. Please note that you must have an order or reference number from your provider before we can issue this letter.

Receiving Correspondence (via post or electronic)

How do Domains By Proxy's email preferences work?

The Whois directory requires an email address for every registered domain name. When you purchase Domains By Proxy, we create a private email address for that domain. Thereafter, when messages are sent to your private email address, we handle them according to the email preference you selected for that particular domain name.

You have three email preferences from which to choose. You can choose to have all of these messages: (i) forwarded; (ii) filtered for spam and then forwarded; or (iii) not forwarded. If you elect to have messages "forwarded" or "filtered for spam then forwarded", they will be forwarded to your "real" email address, the one specified in Customer Information. You may modify your "real" email address at any time. Simply log in to your Domains By Proxy account and click "My Settings." You may then modify your "real" email address by typing over the email address field and clicking "Save". You should also know that you may select one uniform email preference for all of your private domain names. Or, you may select different preferences for different domains. You may modify these preferences at any time. If you do not select an email handling preference, the default setting of "forward all email" will be used.

Can I set up different email preferences for different private domain names?

Yes. Simply log in to your Domains By Proxy account using your User ID and password. Click "My Domains", and then click the domain name and set your email preference.

What does Domains By Proxy do with correspondence addressed to my domain name?

When we receive mail or legal notices (via post or electronic) addressed to your domain name or in reference to your domain, you are notified through your customer account email address. Our email message identifies the sender of the correspondence and includes the sender's contact information. If the complaint was received through post, we forward it to you electronically. If you want to have the original forwarded through overnight courier or facsimile, there is an additional cost. If the complaint is received electronically, it is forwarded to you by email.

What are Domains By Proxy's shipping and handling fees?

If you want to receive hard copies of correspondence, the charge is $0.25 per page plus any shipping charges.

Your registrar bills your credit card for the total shipping and handling charge, only after you have confirmed your request. You must select a shipping option, and the credit card transaction must be successful before we send the correspondence to you.

What methods of payment does Domains By Proxy accept?

We do not bill you for our private registration services. Those fees are billed directly through your registrar. Domains By Proxy does bill you directly for forwarding fees associated with correspondence we ship and/or fax to you (as per your instructions).

Domains By Proxy accepts the following types of payment for its forwarding services:

  • Visa
  • Mastercard
  • American Express
  • Discover
  • Checks
  • PayPal

We do not accept cash, money orders, or other online payment services.
