Domains By Proxy® - Frequently Asked Questions

About Domains By Proxy

Why should I use a privacy service for my domain name registration?

The contact information listed for your domain name has to be publicly available per your registrar's agreement with the International Corporation of Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN). Using false information violates the registration agreement and could lead to the termination of your domain name registration. However, with Domains By Proxy, you can have all the benefits of a domain name registration without exposing your personal information for everyone to see. When you purchase our private domain name registration services, the Whois directory lists Domains By Proxy's name, postal address, email address, and phone number instead of yours.

Although we become the registrant for your domain registration on your behalf, you still retain the FULL BENEFITS OF DOMAIN REGISTRATION. Thus, only you can:

  • Cancel, sell, or transfer your domain registration
  • Cancel our services so that registrant status reverts to you
  • Renew your domain registration upon expiration
  • Designate the name servers to which your domain points
  • Resolve complaints involving your domain registration

To purchase a private domain name registration, go to the website of any of our affiliated registrars and shield your identity today.

How do I know Domains By Proxy won't steal my domain name?

Domains By Proxy is part of the tenured and successful The Go Daddy Group, Inc. family of companies. Because Domains By Proxy is here for the long-term and is committed to building upon the success enjoyed by other Go Daddy Group companies, you should feel secure that our only intention is to help you protect your identity and privacy. In addition, your domain name registration is insured against loss or misuse by Hiscox, as well as backed by your registrar's guarantee.

Please see our Domain Name Proxy Agreement for further details regarding both insurance and your registrar's guarantee.

If I buy a private domain name from Domains By Proxy, will I still be listed as its registrant?

First, Domains By Proxy is not a registrar so you cannot register a domain name directly from us. However, you can use our services with domain names registered through our affiliated registrars, all of which are ICANN-accredited. Second, when you purchase our services, Domains By Proxy becomes the listed (proxied) registrant of the domain name. Even though Domains By Proxy is the listed (proxied) registrant, you retain the FULL BENEFITS OF DOMAIN REGISTRATION. This means that you can:

  • Cancel, sell, or transfer your domain registration
  • Cancel our service so that registrant status reverts to you
  • Renew your domain registration upon expiration
  • Designate the name servers to which your domain points
  • Resolve complaints involving your domain registration

The benefit of this arrangement is that the Whois directory publishes the Domains By Proxy name, postal address, and phone number instead of YOUR name, postal address, email, and phone number. That way, you are protected from spammers, scammers, and other intruders. Click here to see how the Whois directory will look with and without a private domain registration:

Do I have to enter valid contact information for a private domain registration?

Yes. When you purchase a domain name you must include accurate and valid information for all of your contacts (e.g., registrant, administrative, technical, and billing), regardless of whether you choose to make it a "private" or "public" registration. This is the only way your registrar and Domains By Proxy can reach you with issues concerning your domain name and our private registration services.

If you enter false information, you risk having your domain name, as well as our private registration services, canceled entirely. Please review our Domain Name Proxy Agreement and your registrar's agreement carefully so you fully understand your rights and obligations.

How do I check the expiration date of a private registration?

Your privacy service expires when the domain name expires.

Domains By Proxy Accounts

Why do I need a separate Domains By Proxy account?

A separate Domains By Proxy (DBP) account ultimately adds another layer of protection to your domain name — and you!

Unlike many services we offer, DBP, a separate, affiliate company, provides our private registration service. By having a separate DBP account you thwart potential domain name hijackers — they need access to your DBP account and your account with us to cancel your private registration and steal your domain name. Most thieves don't take the time to hack two accounts, and they move on to another domain name.

You might think your domain name isn't valuable. Keep in mind domain name hijacking has increased exponentially over the years. Domain names are now stolen, not just for their value, but to facilitate all types of illicit scams worldwide, including spam and fraud, and to relay malware, destructive bots, and more.

Once you add privacy to a domain name, DBP sends you an email with your DBP account login information. Please retain this information for future reference.

What can I do in my Domains By Proxy account?

In your Domains By Proxy (DBP) account, you can:

  • Update the underlying registrant, administrative, technical, and billing contact information for all private domain name registrations.
  • Update your DBP customer account information, including user name and password settings.
  • Purchase domain authorization letters for SSL certificates, merchant accounts, and other business matters.
  • Establish email forwarding preferences for email addresses associated with your private domain name registrations.

How do I access my Domains By Proxy account?

When you purchase private registration, Domains By Proxy (DBP) sends you an email with your customer number, password and a link to the DBP website. If you forget your login information, you can retrieve your customer number, reset your password, or retrieve your password hint on the DBP website. Simply click Log In and follow the online process for retrieving forgotten login information.

How do I update contact information for my private domain names?

In your Domains By Proxy (DBP) account, you can update the your personal contact information and the underlying contact information for your domain names. When you update contact information in your DBP account, it remains hidden from the public.

If I change my account information with my registrar, will these changes automatically be applied to my Domains By Proxy account?

Your registrar and Domains By Proxy (DBP) accounts are separate. Therefore, any change in your information will require an update through your registrar and through DBP.

Making Changes to Your Domain Name

How do I modify the nameservers associated with my privately registered domain name?

Modification of the nameservers associated with your privately registered domain name must be done through your registrar. You will need to log in to your customer account through your registrar to make changes to your name servers.

How do I transfer my private domain name away from a Domains By Proxy-affiliated registrar?

To transfer a privately-registered domain name away from a Domains By Proxy-affiliated registrar, you need to do the following:

  1. Log in to your Domains By Proxy account and cancel the private registration service for the domain name you want to transfer.
  2. Log in to your customer account at your registrar and unlock the domain name. Then, initiate the transfer process.

How do I transfer a domain name with private registration to new registrant?

You can assign a domain name to a new registrant by logging in to your customer account at your registrar and initiating an "Account Change."

If I cancel my domain name and it has privacy, will my personal information be made public?

Your personal information will not be available in the Whois database for a domain name you have canceled.

Secure Certificates

How do I obtain a Secure Certificate for my privately registered domain name?

You can obtain a secure certificate, digital certificate, or merchant account for your website even if you have a private registration. In this situation, do the following:

  1. Start the application process with the provider of your choice (GoDaddy.com, Thawte, VeriSign, etc.).
  2. Request a Domain Authorization Letter from Domains By Proxy. To request a Domain Authorization Letter, log in to your Domains By Proxy account and select the Request Auth. Letter tab. Once there, you provide information we use to prepare the Domain Authorization Letter. You also pay a $15 service fee for preparation and forwarding of the Domain Authorization Letter, which we forward directly to the provider of your choice.

When requesting a Domain Authorization Letter, please be prepared to provide the following information:

  • Domain name the certificate is in connection with
  • Your name
  • Your Domains By Proxy login ID
  • Your telephone number
  • Certificate issuer's name
  • Order or Reference number from your issuer
  • Voice contact number for issuer
  • Fax number for issuer
  • The name of the applicant for the secure certificate

Complete requests are usually processed within 48 hours and often sooner. Please note that you must have an order or reference number from your provider before we can issue this letter.

Why does Domains By Proxy need to process my Domain Authorization Letter?

When you purchase private registration for your domain name, the contact information for Domains By Proxy (DBP) displays in the Whois database instead of your personal contact information. Because DBP is a separate legal entity from your registrar, we must prepare the Domain Authorization Letter before your Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) certificate or merchant account provider issues the necessary certificate for your website.

In your DBP account, you can request a Domain Authorization Letter for an SSL certificate, merchant account, or another business matter. DBP charges a $15 service fee for each Domain Authorization Letter and usually processes requests within 48 hours.

Email Preferences and Correspondence

How do Domains By Proxy's email preferences work?

The Whois directory requires an email address for every registered domain name. When you purchase Domains By Proxy (DBP), we create a private email address for that domain name. Thereafter, when messages are sent to your private email address, we handle them according to the email preference you select for that particular domain name.

You can set your DBP account to forward your email without filtering it, filter it for spam and then forward it to you, or not forward it at all. By default, DBP filters spam and forwards email messages to the email address you enter on the Customer Information page.

On the Default Email Preference page, you can update the default email forwarding preference for all domain names in your DBP account.

To Update Email Forwarding Settings for All Domain Names

  1. Go to DomainsByProxy.com, and log in to your account.
  2. From Settings, select Default Email Preference. The Default Email Preference page displays.
  3. Select one of the following:
    • Forward all email — DBP forwards all email messages to the email address on the Customer Information page.
    • Filter for spam and forward — DBP filters out spam and forwards your remaining email messages to the email address on the Customer Information page.
    • Do not forward any email — DBP does not forward any email messages to you.
  4. Click Save.

Can I set up different email preferences for different private domain names?

Yes. From the Private Domains tab, you can set an email forwarding preference for a single domain name. If you set a preference for a single domain name, it overrides the default preference.

To Update Email Forwarding Settings for a Single Domain Name

  1. Go to DomainsByProxy.com, and log in to your account.
  2. From Private Domains, select the domain name you want to update the email forwarding preference for.
  3. Click the Set email preferences icon. The Edit Domain Email Preference window displays.
  4. Select one of the following:
    • Use default account setting — For this domain name, DBP uses the email forwarding preference you selected on the Default Email Preference page.
    • Forward all email — DBP forwards all email messages for this domain name to the email address you enter below.
    • Filter for spam and forward — DBP filters out spam and forwards your remaining email messages for this domain name to the email address you enter below.
